This year marks 25 years of the real Living Wage movement, led by the Living Wage Foundation. Over half a million pay rises delivered, more than 16,000 UK employers signed up. What started as a grassroots campaign has become one of the more effective labour initiatives this country has produced.
We became an accredited Living Wage Employer in 2024, though honestly we were already paying at that level before the accreditation. Making it official just felt like the right thing to do.
Why it matters in waste
People sometimes forget what the job actually involves. Our staff collect hazardous substances, handle chemical waste, work on client sites in all weather, and make decisions on the spot that carry real legal weight. Consignment notes filled out wrong, waste classified incorrectly, a container stored badly. These are not hypothetical risks. They land on real people’s desks.
The people who do this work well have usually been doing it for years. They know the regulations, they know the equipment, and they know our clients’ sites. That kind of experience does not walk through the door every week. When you lose someone good in this industry, you feel it.
Paying properly will not solve every problem. But it tells people that the work they do is valued, and that goes further than most employers realise.
A practical decision, not a gesture
The real Living Wage is calculated based on actual living costs, not statutory minimums. We like that about it. It is honest.
We are a small team. Everyone knows everyone. When someone is out on collections, managing a site closure, or dealing with a tricky machinery removal, the rest of the team feels it. That closeness is a strength, but it also means we cannot afford to treat people as replaceable. Because they are not.
Paying the real Living Wage is one part of that. It is not the whole picture, but it is a part we are genuinely proud of.
Looking ahead
We have chosen to stay part of the Living Wage movement because it fits who we are. Not because it looks good on an InspireWaste website, but because the people who do the hardest work in this business deserve to be paid like it matters.
We wrote about our living wage accreditation when it happened, if you want the full story. And if you are looking for a waste management company where the people turning up to your site are experienced, well looked after, and planning to stick around, we would like to think that starts here.
